Our language assistant, Elyse

My name is Elyse Pfleger, and I am from the United States. I grew up in New Jersey, right near the beach and very close to New York City. When I was in college, I studied abroad in Granada for five months, where I fell in love with Spain and Andalusian culture. I studied literature and education at school, and now that I have graduated, I want to be an English teacher. While I am living here in Cádiz, I want to make new Spanish friends and improve my ability to speak Spanish. I am excited to work here with all of you at IES Muro. Thank you for giving me a warm welcome during my first month! I know this year will bring good things for all of us.

Yesterday we had fun at school celebrating Halloween with contests, decorations, haunted houses, tasting and games. Thanks to students, teachers and parents for this wonderful day!

Our students' Dream House

In this section, students of 1ESO were studying household vocabulary, as well as the verb “to have” and the grammatical structures for “there is/are.” Students worked in pairs to design their dream house, draw it, and label the rooms and furniture inside. The students were very creative in their designs and it was evident that they took pride in their work. House types ranged from villas to castles, boat houses, and even a tree house. Inside, houses included all the regular rooms, such as a kitchen, living room, bathroom, etc., as well as more innovative rooms, such as home theaters and indoor pools. In addition to a floor plan, the students also drew the furniture they expected their dream house to have, such as beds, sofas, lamps, and cupboards. Some chose to add a garage in which they kept a ferrari or a motorcycle. After collaborating to draw and label the house, the students then presented their house to their classmates. They were expected to use the forms “there is/are,” as in “there are two balconies,” and the verb “to have,” as in “the house has got two floors.” You can see the quality and creativity of their work below.
