Who was Saint Patrick?

Who was the famous Saint that is now associated with everything Irish? There are many accounts about who Saint Patrick was and what he did.
  • He was born in 387 AD to the name Maewyn Succat.
  • He was born in Scotland (Roman Britain).
  • At age 16, he was taken captive to Ireland where he sold to slavery and spent 6 years working as a slave for various owners.
  • While in captivity, he drew comfort in the Christian faith that many had abandoned under Roman rule.
  • One day, he heard a voice which told him he would soon be leaving captivity. And this he did rather easily: he escaped simply by walking away towards the coast where he took a boat back to his family.
  • Once back in Britain, he studied various religions and traveled all over.
  • He returned to Irelend, where he preached and built many churches (although he was not often well-received). He escaped dealth at least 12 times while traveling and spreading the new religion.
  • He converted a great deal of people to Christianity.
  • Saint Patrick is known for driving the snakes from Ireland. This is said because in the Pagan religion, snakes were a religious symbol, and as Ireland was converted to Christianity, snakes were no longer used as a symbol of religion and therefore were 'driven out.'
  • He died on the 17th of March 461 AD - the reason for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day on this date!
